DIY Polka Dot Lamp

For those of you who are regular readers you know that one of my most favorite things in the world is taking a piece of thrift store junk and turning into something special.

DIY Polka Dotted Lamp

Check out how I made this adorable polka dotted lamp out of a $3.00 Goodwill lamp!

Recently on one of my Goodwill trips I came across a little sad looking lamp that was thrown in a corner with about an inch thick of dust crusted on it.  There was no shade and I wasn’t even sure if it worked.  There was something about the shape and smaller size of the base that caught my eye.

When I brought it the register it rang up for $3.00 and the lady working there threw in the lamp shade for free.   We popped a light bulb in, turned it on, and it worked perfectly!

Now.. you are probably thinking that it’s not that hideous…. but…. this picture was taken after I scrubbed all the grime off and soaked and scraped the three separate  price tags off.   It’s also hard in this picture to tell but the lamp base was a sad and lackluster off white color.   I also wasn’t a huge fan of the size and shape of the lamp shade.

So I got to work..

Step 1
Clean the lamp base off and smooth out any nicks or raised little bumps with sandpaper.  Use a tack cloth to get all of the dust off.

Step 2
Cover any areas that you do not want paint to get on….like the socket with aluminum foil.

A favorite trick of mine when spray painting anything that has a chord is to gather it together and put it in a Ziploc bag and close the bag as much as you can so the entire cord is covered.

Step 3
Choose a paint color and start painting.  I chose a crisp white glossy spray paint that I already had on hand for the lamp base and gave it a couple of coats.

Step 4
Add a fun design!  When I got the lamp home I realized it would work perfectly in my daughter’s room which I was in the middle of making over.   So…I wanted to do something fun with the lamp.  I kicked around doing an ombre effect,  splatter paint, or brush strokes but in the end metallic gold polka dots won out!

I grabbed my favorite Sharpie Metallic Gold Paint Pen and got to work.

I just randomly drew little dots all over the lamp.  I was careful as I worked not to smear any of the dots with my hand.   They only took few minutes to dry completely.

Step 5
Add a shade and a light bulb.  As I mentioned earlier I wasn’t really loving the shape of the lamp shade and I also felt it was too big and a little beat up.

I dug around the house and found a black perfectly sized lamp shade with metallic gold trim that was part of an old unused buffet lamp.

One of my main DIY tips is always “shop” your own house when looking for odds and ends to complete a project.  I have found so many “cast offs” that were just thrown in the basement storage area because we had nowhere else to put them.  It’s times like this I pat myself on the back for being the borderline hoarder that I am.

I love the way this little project turned out.

It added the perfect finishing touch to the dresser in my daughter’s room.
