Family Room Art Pair Choice & Update Ideas

As I mentioned in this post I have been on the hunt for the perfect artwork pair for over the sofa in our family room.  I have finally narrowed it down to a few contenders.   As I do with my clients I made up “design boards” so I could get a feel for how each pair would work with the rest of the space.

This little nugget of a family room is definitely a work in progress.  Instead of doing one big great reveal I’m going to take you along for the ride as I update and “refresh” the space.  Let’s get real…that’s what most folks do.  We add and tweak, add and tweak, and add and tweak some more, until we get it just right.  Like for instance this 15 year old leather sofa, loveseat, and chair….is far from what I currently envision for this room…but many moons ago when our teenagers were toddlers they were perfect for wiping up grimy finger prints and hiding crayon and pen marks.  So for now we live with them until we can get what we really want. We decorate around them and squint our eyes when looking at them.

All of the art contenders are quite different in style but look equally great in the space.

After monkeying around for a few weeks I finally decided on the prints from the Etsy shop, Sisi and Seb.   I thought black and white was the way to go since the rug is so over the top and colorful and I fell in love with The Rose Print and had to have it.  The “Let’s Stay Home” print paired nicely with it and had that minimalist feel I wanted.

An added bonus was both prints were sold as “Instant Digital Downloads” and only cost me $6.26 each.  For those of you who are not aware….there are numerous stores on Etsy that sell and then send you art on a file for you to download.  Smaller art can be printed right on your home printer and large art can be taken to a print shop.  I took my files to my local Staples and had them printed out as black and white “Engineered Prints” for only $3.95 each.  Colored prints would be slightly more expensive (no more then $1.00 or $2.00 ). The paper is flimsy but I was framing them so didn’t mind.

Rose Print

My vision was to have the art really fill up that space above the sofa so I wanted each print to be 24″ x 36″.   Kathrin from Sisi and Seb was such a pleasure to work with.  I purchased both prints and Kathrin tweaked the Rose Print so it could be printed out as a 24″x36″ and set up a custom listing for me….it originally was not designed to be printed out that large.   Originally I was hesitant about the “Let’s Stay Home” print because I thought that the font was too light…so Kathrin made a version that was bolder based upon my suggestion.  I highly recommend her shop, she has such a variety of pretty art.  See all of her prints here.

Large frames can be really pricey but I purchased two of these frames from Michael’s and got an amazing deal.

The frame is regularly  $49.99, however, they were on sale for $18.00 ! If interested hurry because I have no idea how long they will be at that price.  You can get them here.

I really love how they look over the sofa.  They really fill in that space.

Our Family Room Refresh is coming along.   I do plan on getting a new sofa and loveseat or a sectional.   I’m still pretty hesitant to spend thousands right now so I’m scouring Craig’s List for a perfect designer sofa that’s practically brand new, has lived in a pet free home, and is a steal.  I know it’s out there and I will find it!!

Next we will be adding some long shelving and art around the tv.  I saw this image on Pinterest from Lowe’s that is acting as my inspiration.

I also need to decide what color to paint my Campaign desk and dresser.  I scored these beauties at a thrift store for something ridiculous like $100 but they have been this salmon color since we brought them home three years ago.  The color’s not bad and even looks pretty good with the rug but I can’t even tell you how tired of it I am.

I really have been leaning towards using neutral colors to offset our rug.. so I was thinking perhaps painting it white, black, charcoal, light gray or perhaps a light shade of blue?  Here is some inspo…..

Let me know what color you think would be great for my campaign dresser in the comment section…I could use all of the help I can get!

  1. Looks great! I like white because of balance it creates in the room with your built in TV console. But, I also love the idea of gray to pickup the color in the backround of the area rug. Love, Evelyn
