We spent this Memorial weekend in Long Beach Island, NJ. LBI (How locals refer to the island) has been my home away from home since I can remember. My grandparents were “snowbirds.” Their summer months were spent in LBI and their winter ones in Sarasota, Fl. My father and sister both have houses here on the same street. We are very fortunate to have family down there and take full advantage of it when we can.
I want to share a few pics of my sister’s place. It was built in 1945 and is one of the only original homes still left on the block. They all have been replaced by “McMansions.”
Isn’t she a beauty? This is what a beach house should look like in my opinion. Not too flashy or imposing. Memorial Day Weekend is the official start of the summer season here at the Jersey Shore. It’s when most homeowners are just beginning the process of “summarizing” their homes. My sister in no exception which is why I was only permitted to snap a few photos:) pretend you don’t see the hanging outlet…
I love everything. The coral and linen color combo is spot on. The walls were made with Pecky Cypress lumber and are original to the house. They were white washed by the previous owners, this instantly modernized the look of the home and opened everything up. The built ins are original and were updated by a fresh coat of grayish blue paint on the insides. The color contrast makes all of their treasures pop. The coffee table has a glass top that flips up and inside my sister’s shell and sea glass collection lay on beach sand..
We also ate a lot of yummy food over the weekend and I wanted to share a couple of the easiest dishes that you can do at home.
To make the salad you just take a bag of chopped lettuce and add some shredded Monterey Jack cheese and crushed tortilla chips and toss in some Marie’s chipotle ranch dressing. Done! The shrimp is even easier. We grabbed some fresh medium size uncooked shrimp from a local fishery and rinsed and shelled them. You can easily substitute a bag of frozen shrimp for the fresh. The next step is to marinate the shrimp in” Mango Coconut Marinade” by Tropical Pepper co.
This stuff is the bomb and can be found in most grocery stores. After marinating it for a good hour just put the shrimp under the broiler for about 10 minutes or until golden!
LBI has always been much more of a laid back beach town then a shoppers paradise. Many Jersey Shore beach towns have sections where you can find lots of trendy shops. LBI has a few if you know where to look. We stayed close to “Beach Haven”, the town where my sister lives. The first place we went to has been a favorite of mine for awhile. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a little birthday present or hostess gift. There are so many treasures to be found.
The store is called “How to Live”. They have a few locations on the island. There is lots of fun things to see…
This year I discovered an upscale home furnishings and gift store called “Wyndecrest Home.” It’s fabulous!
I walked in and was blown away by all of the color. There is so much eye candy to see everywhere you look….
So there you have it.. I hope you enjoyed my weekend recap and the next time you’re near the NJ Coast stop by and check out Long Beach Island and share with us your adventures!
